Bearing Witness

Journalists Sune Engel Rasmussen and Danielle Moylan are describing their return from Helmand Province, Afghanistan’s frontline, where the Taliban are recapturing territory. According to them, the 30-minute drive was far more harrowing than standing a few hundred metres away from Taliban fire.

In her New York Times article Spring on the Afghan Frontlines, Danielle details crossing a road targeted by Taliban snipers. Running while Afghan officers spray bullets in the direction of the Taliban, they enter an abandoned school and through a sniper hole see two large white Taliban flags flapping in the breeze. The scene makes my hair stand on end.
