Dutch-Australian filmmaker Jason van Genderen was among the first to realise the potential of his mobile phone. Walking through the streets of New York and Sydney, he was struck by the plight of the homeless in each city. Reaching into his pocket, he realised he had the perfect tool on hand for telling their stories. Filming on his phone gave him the immediacy and the intimacy he needed to convey a sense of what their lives were really like. This was filming from the inside out – from within a community, instead of observing it from the outside.
